Hi there, it’s Charlie! I want to talk about a recent culinary adventure – trading traditional fries for a low-sodium, highly nutritious substitute: sweet potato fries. Like many of us, I’ve always been a fan of french fries, but since my heart attack, I’ve made it a priority to reduce my sodium intake. The mission was to create a delicious, satisfying alternative that didn’t make me miss the classic fries.

Enter, the humble sweet potato.

Sweet potatoes, especially the white-fleshed variety, are packed with essential nutrients. They’re high in vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese, fiber, and several other key nutrients. The best part? They’re low in sodium. As for flavor, they’re slightly sweet, with a creamy texture that’s just delightful.

To make the switch to sweet potatoes more appealing, I decided to put my air fryer to good use. Soaking the sweet potato fries in an ice bath before cooking removes the excess starch, which helps to make your fries crispier – a game-changing technique. I seasoned them with garlic powder and chili powder – no salt necessary – and cooked them until they were golden brown and crispy.

The result? Delicious, satisfying sweet potato fries that didn’t have me missing the old salty version.

To add a little extra flavor without the added sodium, I served these fries with no-salt ketchup. It’s the perfect pairing, offering that classic ketchup and fries combo we all love.

The real win here is seeing how small changes, like swapping regular fries for sweet potato fries, can make a big difference in our health without compromising on flavor. It’s proof that a low-sodium diet doesn’t have to be a tasteless one.

Next time you’re craving fries, give this recipe a try. Your taste buds and your heart will thank you for it. Stay tuned for more of my low-sodium adventures, and remember – healthy food can and should be delicious.

Keep it tasty,
Charlie

Ingredients

  • 1 Sweet Potato
  • Olive oil
  • Garlic powder
  • Chili powder
  • Pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into fries, about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Soak the cut fries in a bowl of ice-cold water for about 30 minutes. This will help to remove the excess starch and make your fries crispier.
  • While the sweet potatoes are soaking, preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • After 30 minutes, drain the sweet potatoes and pat them dry with a clean towel.
  • In a large bowl, toss the dried sweet potato fries with olive oil, garlic powder, and chili powder until evenly coated.
  • Arrange the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Don't overcrowd them – you may have to cook in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
  • Cook the fries at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes. Then, shake the basket to flip the fries and cook for another 5-10 minutes, until they're crispy and golden brown.
  • Remove the fries from the air fryer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

I prefer the white flesh Sweet potatoes over the orange ones.
